Can anyone explain how to strum so that the index finger does not strike the fretboard on the downstrum? I can't find any videos on this subject. My index finger doesn't always strike it but I can tell when it does because I can hear it. Thank you to anyone who responds.

May I ask a related question? My downstrumming index fingernail commonly strikes the uke body (I do hold the uke at 45 degrees), resulting in an “tap” sound on about 2/3 of my downstrums. I’ve considered that I may be tipping the uke slightly toward my face (to better see my string fingering; I’m a beginner). But even when I twist the uke face more perpendicular to the floor, I still hear the nail tapping, just less. Any advice welcome. Thanks!
