Don’t panic. This is really common. Most people presume strumming is the easiest thing to get on a uke but I think it can be really tricky. Be patient with yourself and go back to basics. This video goes into a lot of detail. The main points for me is getting that 45 degree angle and keeping your strum as light as possible. The saddle could be in the wrong way around. If it is compensated (not straight) the third string (G on baritone) should be the furthest back. Changing strings can cause buzzing. If the nut slots aren’t perfect a thinner string may move about in the slot. You may also find lower tension strings are more likely to cause fret buzz. Try to see if you can isolate the buzz. Is it just certain strings? Does it happen only in open position or when you play certain frets?

Good on you for keeping your local library going. Before I started teaching uke full time I managed Streatham and Brixton Libraries and before that I was a children’s librarian in Devon. So many happy memories. Libraries are magical places.

There are so many great brands to choose from. Flight; Kala and Ohana all make great concert ukes. Have a think about whether you want a wider bit for more space - Islander do a nice wide nut. Another tip - check out Mainland ukuleles. Their red cedar concert is one of my all time favourite uke models. They’re made in the far east but set up in the USA.

I’ve got a full half hour video on the Uke TLC course showing you how to change strings. It goes into a lot of details about the headstock and bridge end (all different kinds of bridges too.)

Percy is great and a good friend. He plays banjo, mandolin and tenor guitar on the record. There are a few other uke teachers on there too but they’re all playing other instruments - Paul Mansell (classical guitar and ebow), Phil Doleman (slide guitar), Matt Hicks(guitar) and Marc Gallagher (piano). The strings are all by James Agg who is a brilliant local bass and cello player. My friend Jeff Peterson is on slack key guitar on three of the tracks too. I was so happy to get him as he’s a Grammy winner and such an amazing musician. I’m very blessed to know great players. The cover is my favourite Degas painting. I flipped it so that it fit the design better (if you look closely the signature is back to front!)
