Learn to Chuck on the Ukulele in 2 Minutes
Ever felt like your strumming sounds a bit flat? That’s where the chuck comes in. It’s one of the simplest but most effective ways to make your strumming punchy and professional — and the best part is, you can learn it in just a couple of minutes.
What is a Chuck?
A chuck is a muted strum that adds rhythm and groove to your playing. Instead of letting the strings ring out, you stop them with your strumming hand right after hitting them. It creates a percussive “chuck” sound that drives the rhythm forward.
How to Do It
Strum down as normal.
Immediately flatten fingers (add extra fingers if needed) onto the strings where you're holding the chord (see video)
Keep your hand relaxed — the goal is a sharp “chuck,” not a heavy thud.
Practice alternating between normal strums and chucks.
Why Use It?
The chuck works on hundreds of songs across all styles — from pop to reggae. It’s one of those techniques that instantly makes you sound like you’ve been playing for years.
✨ Give it a go — try chucking on beats 2 and 4 in a simple four-beat strum. You’ll be amazed at the difference.
